A life long love with wood furniture has lead me through many interesting and even fascinating journeys. My first encounter was when I was twelve years old. Sitting on the back porch I noticed a neighbor set a wood chair by the trash bin. Curious, I walked over and asked what he was doing. "We're throwing it away." was his shocking answer. Surprised at my self, I asked him if I could have it. I quickly carried it home before he could change his mind. As I looked it over I wondered why someone would put so much paint on it. Mom looked at me smiling and said, "You have to wash that off if you think you are going to bring it into the house." My dad's assessment was a little different. "You could scrape all the paint off with a piece of broken glass and have a nice chair. Shortly he came back with a thick piece of glass and began to show me how to scrape. It was like magic, beautiful oak wood began to appear. I spent many afternoons scraping and scraping to my dad's delight.

The journey had begun! From that day on I had to rescue every rejected, discarded and unwanted piece of furniture. Through the years my house began to be filled with beautiful pieces of rescued treasures. Going to auctions and flea markets became a favorite past time. With each new acquisition I sought better ways to refurbish and refinish the woods. The repair of wood furniture became a talent of mine. The more of wood furniture I acquired my passion grew. As friends and family saw the results of my passion, they started asking me to refurbish their antique furniture pieces. Soon my husband and I were spending all of our weekends refurbishing furniture which grew into a full time business over the course of 37 years.

It's my desire to stimulate or encourage your interest in refurbishing wood furniture. We learned and developed many shortcuts and secrets. Every piece of wood has a distinct and unique characteristic that must be recognized. Nothing can be manufactured with the beauty of natural grain and patina of wood.

Over the years the most frequently asked question was “does refurbishing and refinishing add to or take away from the value of my piece of furniture?” Get the answer to this and other furniture related topics by reading our articles on wood care.
